Once Upon a Time…
I chose “From
Brother’s Grimm to Disney” because I grew up in a very poor family. I was also
one of the youngest of seven siblings, I was the first person to graduate high
school and first to come to college. I needed something to tell me anything
could happen for someone like me. I found fairytales first as hand me down
videos from my sister. They allowed me the comfort of believing that anything
could happen with just a little hope. Growing up I believed in the Disney
fairytales, thinking they were the original, then I found the original stories
my sophomore year of high school. This sparked my interest in the original
fairytales, so when I saw that McDaniel offered a FYS on it, I waned to take
the class to learn more of the origins of other fairytales. I hope to learn why
fairytales help us through hard times in our life or why they create hope for
someone like me when all they are are just a compilation of words that really
mean nothing. They don’t provide any truth or fact that anything would ever
actually happen in life.

My favorite
fairytales are Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Brave. I like these
fairytales because they have quite literally shaped who I am. Snow white taught
me to love nature; Arora taught me to be nice to everyone; Cinderella taught me
to not give up even in hard times; and Merida taught me to be myself and not
conform to something you don’t agree with. Out of them I would say that I prefer
Cinderella and Merida just because I feel like I learned more from them.
